The Volkswagen Taos is a new compact crossover SUV that promises to be one of the sharpest-looking crossover vehicles on the road today. It's one of the newest members of the Volkswagen family. Sure, the new Taos might be slightly smaller than the flagship VW Atlas, but it seats five passengers in total comfort. It measures 9.3-inches shorter than its larger sibling, the VW Tiguan. Named for Taos, New Mexico, the Taos SUV from Volkswagen is a completely new vehicle planted firmly in the middle of the compact crossover SUV ranks. 

The new Volkswagen Taos for sale is powered by an equally new 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 cylinder engine delivering 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque at the relatively docile speed of 1,750 RPM. This engine utilizes Miller Cycle protocols, which combine high fuel injection pressure with variable turbine geometry. This engine is more powerful and fuel-efficient than the engine found in the current VW Jetta sedan. This new Volkswagen Taos is available with either front or all-wheel-drive.

The power from the Taos' transverse-mounted 1.5-liter turbo engine is delivered to its front-wheel drive (FWD) axle by an 8-speed automatic transmission. The available Taos 4Motion all-wheel-drive powertrain uses VW's electro-hydraulic clutch pack to move power forward and back with the help of a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Taos is equipped with a specially-tuned suspension that includes a torsion-bar rear axle on front-drive models. Drivers ordering the all-wheel-drive Taos 4Motion will enjoy a multilink suspension that gives the Taos a decidedly European driving feel, resulting in stellar ride quality and engaging handling.

Think of the new VW Taos as a small SUV that thinks big. Although the Taos may be small in stature, placing it at the very bottom of the VW SUV lineup, behind the newly restyled Tiguan and all-new all-electric VW ID4, it is certainly big on features. The Volkswagen Atlas and the VW Atlas Sport are the two flagship vehicles at the top of the lineup.

There are a variety of looks, too. The new VW Taos features reduced overhangs at the front and rear bumpers, which aid in tackling the outdoors, especially when trailbusting or when trying to negotiate a hill. It's loaded with upscale features, including an LED light bar that runs from side to side and is reminiscent of the larger Atlas flagship.

The new Taos is built on Volkswagen's MQB platform. Like so many others in the VW family, the MQB provides a perfect foundation for a variety of vehicles. The so-called good bones can be extended to varying lengths for a variety of vehicle sizes. The Taos body features design elements like squared-off wheel wells, a low-slung stance and a purposeful ride height that alludes to the Taos' capabilities. Trim levels are the determining factor in how your Taos is equipped. Depending on trim level, the Taos will receive either 17-inch, 18-inch or 19-inch wheels.

The new VW Taos features an elegantly understated interior. Buyers can select between a two-tone fabric or leatherette seating, which looks surprisingly very much like the real thing. Digital gauges face and inform the driver of the vehicle's operation. A 6.5-inch touchscreen display is standard, but it can be upgraded to Volkswagen's MIB3 system, which includes an 8.0-inch screen complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Luggage room inside the VW Taos is almost as large as that found in the Volkswagen Tiguan. Total interior volume checks in at 99.9 cubic feet of passenger and cargo space. Cargo-wise, there are 28.1 cubic feet behind the rear seat. Fold the second-row bench seat forward and your cargo-hauling ability jumps to 66.3 cubic feet.

There are standard features galore, including onboard Wi-Fi, automatic LED headlights and a push-button starter. The Taos can be ordered in three "flights" or trim levels ranging from base S, SE and SEL versions.

Safety features did not take a back seat here in the VW Taos. This new model can be equipped with the VW IQ.Drive Safety suite. This safety suite is standard on the top shelf Taos SEL and optional on the S and SE models. The safety suite includes adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. They are joined by Park Distance Control and Active High-beam lighting.
